A new update has been made under LPG connection to be provided under Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana. As aadhar card has been mandatory for many schemes now government has mandate Aadhar card for LPG connections too. Women of households below poverty line will need to enrol for Aadhaar by May 31 to be able to avail themselves of a free LPG connection under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana.
This decision was taken after making the 12-digit identification number compulsory for subsidised cooking gas cylinders under its Pahal scheme a few months ago By Petroleum Minister.
Aadhar card is playing an important role as till now government has made Aadhaar mandatory for nearly three dozen welfare schemes such as the midday meal scheme over the past one week.
Pradhan Mantri Ujjwlaa Yojana was launched last year by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Ballia in Uttar Pradesh, the government aims to give five crore LPG connections to BPL families by 2019 while absorbing the cost of Rs 1,600 per connection.
Till now under Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana approx 1.67 crore free LPG connections have been released under the scheme, which is among the more successful schemes of the Modi government and has had an impact especially in Uttar Pradesh.
This move to mandate Aadhar card for LPG connections have been taken to impact nearly 3.23 crore BPL women who are still to benefit from the scheme.
